The US Tuesday warned Ugandan authorities about the possibility of a terror attack in February or March in the capital city of Kampala, Xinhua reported.

"The threat information indicates that a group of attackers is possibly in place and ready to strike targets inside Kampala in February or March," the US mission in Uganda said in a statement posted on its website. "There are indications that the Uganda National Museum is one of the potential targets."

The US embassy said that although potential targets could change, US citizens should avoid the Uganda National Museum and other crowded public places or events that are potential targets of terrorists.

The warning comes amid security alertness in the country following similar police warnings that terrorists may attack.

The Somali militant group Al-Shabaab, linked to Al Qaeda, has issued several warnings to Uganda that they will attack if the country does not withdraw its peacekeeping troops from Somalia.

In July 2010, Al-Shabaab had launched suicide bomb attacks, killing more than 80 people Kampala.
