The USGS on Saturday upgraded the intensity of an earthquake that shook Nepal to 7.9 on the Richter scale from an earlier estimate of 7.5. China Earthquake Networks Center, however, put the intensity at a staggering 8.1.

India Meteorological Department head L.S. Rathore said that the earthquake had an intensity of 7.5 on the Richter scale. He said that a strong aftershock measured 6.6.

The first earthquake was followed by a temblor of comparatively lesser intensity. The epicentre of both the temblors was at Lamjung in Nepal - a district some 75 km northwest of capital Kathmandu. The epicentre of the first quake was 29 km east of Lamjung while the second quake was 49 km east of Lamjung.

The tremors were felt in Nepal, India and Bangladesh.
