The Vishwa Hindu Parisad (VHP) on Sunday criticised Jharkhand's BJP-led government for failing to strictly implement the law against cow slaughter and demanded ban on beef in the state.

The demand came a day after clashes between two communities here after a piece of beef was found in a temple situated in Doranda locality on Friday night. Two people sustained bullet injuries during the clashes.

"We demand ban on beef in the state. When cow slaughter was banned in 2005, present Chief Minister Raghubar Das was a minister. Now, Das is taking no step to implement the law," Pramod Mishra, VHP's Jharkhand head, told IANS.

He said: "We will write a letter to the president of India, the prime Minster, the governor and others to direct the state government to strictly follow the law against cow slaughter."

"We also demand special task force and special court to arrest people involved in cow slaughter and their trial in courts."

Mishra said: "There is no mechanism to keep watch on the slaughter houses."
