A criminal, for whose capture both Ghaziabad and Noida police had announced rewards, was Monday shot dead in Loni area of this Uttar Pradesh district bordering Delhi, police said.
The incident occurred near Tronica city.
Police said it received information that criminals, riding in two cars, fired about a dozen shots at a person who was going towards Baghpat in his own car.
Reaching the spot, police found that the man, who had sustained over a dozen bullet injuries, had died. About a dozen empty cartridges were found in and around the car, while the assailants had swiftly escaped, said eye witnesses.
On the basis of the driver licence found in the deceased's pocket, he was identified as Amit Kumar, son of Vijay Singh, resident of Mandawali area of Delhi.
A known criminal of the area, he carried a reward of Rs.12,000 on his head from Noida police while a reward of Rs.5,000 was announced for his arrest by Ghaziabad police. He was one of the accused in the indiscriminate firing in a marriage function in Sahibabad about two years ago in which three people were killed.
"We have registered a criminal case against unidentified assailants. The hunt is on to nab the criminals. The deceased body had been sent for post mortem and the family had been informed about the incident" said Inspector Gorakh Nath Yadav of Loni police station.
