WBC to get Indian taste

Delhiites will get an eyefull of professional pugilism when the World Boxing Council (WBC) -organised Pro Boxing Champions Night will be held in the open area of the Select City Walk mall here on Saturday night.

The event is being organised by the North India Boxing Association (NIBA), who have the approval of WBC Professional Circuit and Asian Boxing Circuit, and will feature four professional bouts with the main event between former Commonwealth Youth Games medallist Neeraj Goyat, 23, who will challenge seasoned Filipino Nelson Gulpe for the Asian 66 kg title in a 12-round match.

Other Indian fighters are 2010 Commonwealth Games medallist Dilbag Singh (72 kg), who will be making his pro boxing debut, Balbir Singh (56 kg), Vikas Hooda (91 kg) and Gurlal Singh (91 kg).

Dilbagh will face American Clinton Smith in a six-round bout, Balbir will fight Khunkir Vor Vizrath in a four-round fight while Vikas and Gurlal will take on each other in also a four-round battle.

"Pro Boxing Champions Night is an effort to make professional boxing popular among Indian people and to make it a good earning sport for professional boxers, as on the monetary level, they are not being paid well," said NIBA vice-president Kawaljit Singh here on Friday.
