Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has said in his traditional Christmas address to the media that "for many people Real Madrid represents Spain and we are obliged to lead by example and be transparent".
"Real Madrid is one of this country's most beloved symbols. For many people Real Madrid represents Spain. That brings with it an enormous amount of responsibility for all of us and we have the obligation to protect that image, lead by example and be transparent, and continue to add to the Real Madrid legend," Efe quoted Perez as saying on Monday.
"I belong to a generation that fought hard for this system of coexistence we enjoy today in this country. And I would also like to say that it was one of the most exciting periods of my life. We worked hard so that the press could work freely to meet the demands of a democratic society," stressed the president of Real Madrid.
"You (the press) also have a responsibility to report everything that goes on at our club while adhering to the values of journalism. I wish you all happy holidays with your families and loved ones and hope that 2016 brings you good health, which is the most important thing of all," he said.
Recently, Real were suspended from taking part in the Copa del Rey knockout stage after fielding Denis Cheryshev, who was suspended for picking up three yellow cards in the competition while he was on loan to Villarreal last season. And a host of controversies surrounded the Real camp this year.
"We are a club with 113 years of history and the most illustrious football trophy cabinet of all time. Real Madrid is considered to be the most prestigious and valuable club in the world. We are aware that we have to show respect to our fans, our members and the press, who in turn have always shared this sense of responsibility with us.
"I ask you not to stray away from the codes we fight for and that are so essential for continuing to build a more free and democratic society," Perez added.
