Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other political leaders of the country on Wednesday expressed grief over the suicide by a distraught farmer from Rajasthan here.
Following were the reactions from various leaders on the suicide of Gajendra Singh, a farmer from Rajasthan's Dausa district, who hanged himself from a tree at the Aam Aadmi Party's rally at Jantar Mantar here:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi: "Gajendra's death has saddened the nation. At no point must the hardworking farmer think he is alone. We are all together in creating a better tomorrow for the farmers of India."
Union Home Minister Rajantah Singh: "Deeply pained to hear the news of a farmer committing suicide at Jantar Mantar. Instructed Delhi CP (commissioner of police) to institute an inquiry into the incident."
Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda: "All possible help would be provided to the family members of the deceased. We are trying to contact Gajendra's family members."
Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi: "It is unfortunate. The farmers are being punished by the (Narendra) Modi government. It is a government that heads the corporates of this country... is fully focused on helping them."

Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje: "I am sad and shocked with the incident. We will take all the necessary steps, including compensation to help the kin of the deceased."
Communist Party of India (Marxist) general secretary Sitaram Yechuri: "Suicide by the farmer is very unfortunate. This is a clear signal that the condition of farmers is not good in our country. Governments must take concrete steps to solve their problems."
AAP leader Kumar Vishwas: "Gajendra's decision to take this extreme step is his biggest statement revealing the plight of thousands of farmers whose crops have been damaged and are now facing the danger of acquisition of their land."
