Woman attacked with acid in Srinagar

Unidentified assailants Thursday hurled acid on a young woman law student in the Jammu and Kashmir capital, leaving her in a scarred and critical condition, police said. A manhunt is on to nab the attackers.

Police said the 21-year-old woman was attacked by car-borne assailants in Nowshehra area in the afternoon.

She was admitted to the Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) Soura, where doctors said her condition was critical, a police officer told IANS.

Attending doctors said the woman had serious acid burn injuries on her face that could rob her of her vision.

Police said the woman was a student of a law college in the city.

A manhunt was launched by police to nab the attackers.

"Today (Thursday), two unidentified attackers threw acid on a girl near Law College Tawheedabad, Nowshera, in the jurisdiction of Soura police station," a police statement issued here said.

The attackers fled in a white Maruti car that had a sticker pasted on its rear glass that said "MANSA".

Police asked people to inform them if they see a white Maruti car with the sticker.

Agitated residents stopped traffic in Nowshehra area for several hours, demanding the arrest of the assailants and exemplary punishment to them.
