Rio de Janeiro, July 9 (IANS/EFE) With barely four days to go before its finale, the 2014 FIFA World Cup broke the record of the amount of data downloaded from the internet compared to any other tournament.

The new record is due to the increase in the number of fans watching games on the web through licensed FIFA platforms which allow live streaming of the games, reports Efe.

"We are proud to say that this FIFA World Cup has been the biggest multimedia sporting event in history with more people watching matches and highlights online than ever before," said FIFA Director of TV Niclas Ericson.

World Cup's legal online streaming is available in 10 countries and can reach 500,000 active users in prime time while the FIFA smartphone app was downloaded more that 10 million times since its release in June.
