The YSR Congress party staged candlelight demonstrations across Andhra Pradesh Monday evening to mark its chief Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy's one year in jail in connection with illegal assets case.

Holding candles in their hands, the leaders and activists marched in Hyderabad and other towns to protest what they called his continued undemocratic detention.

Jagan, as the Kadapa MP is popularly called, Monday completed one year in jail in the illegal assets case.

His mother and party's honorary president Y.S. Vijayamma led a march at Necklace Road here. Jagan's other family members, several leaders of the party and a large number of supporters attended the rally.

Jagan's sister Sharmila staged a protest at Narsapuram in West Godavari district along with hundreds of others.

Addressing a massive public meeting at Narsapuram, Sharmila, who is on a 'padyatra' or walkathon, targeted the Congress and the Telugu Desam Party, saying they have conspired to keep Jagan away from people as they were unable to fight him politically.

She alleged that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) was deliberately prolonging the case probe under the directions of its political bosses to keep Jagan behind bars for a long time.

She said the two parties were afraid of Jagan after the party's victory in by-elections and hence hatched a conspiracy to implicate him in false case to tarnish his image and cause him financial loss.

Stating that Jagan has done nothing wrong, she said with the people's support he would fight all conspiracies. She predicted that Jagan would become the next chief minister and bring back the "golden rule" of their father Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy.
