While describing the “downfall” of the Congress, a senior government official cited the example of Safdar Jung, who had been the subadar nawab of Oudh. “Safdar Jung wasn’t a Mughal emperor,” the official said. “He was just the subadar nawab of Oudh appointed by the Mughals. Then why is his tomb almost as grand as that of Aurangzeb? Because while the empire was crumbling, everyone tried to grab a piece and become rich, and Safdar Jung became rich enough to have a grand tomb of his own.” Without taking names, the official said the Congress could not form the government in Manipur and Goa simply because “some” people involved wanted the “empire” to fall.
