Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders were overjoyed on Thursday as an opinion poll predicted the party would sweep the 2017 Assembly elections in Punjab. The research agency, CVoter, whose accuracy has, at best, been inconsistent, predicted the AAP would win anywhere between 94 and 100 seats in the 117-seat Assembly.
It claimed that the ruling alliance of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and the Bharatiya Janata Party would manage six to 12 seats and that the Amarinder Singh-led Congress in the state might win eight to 14 seats. It also said Delhi Chief Minister and AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal was the most popular Punjab chief ministerial candidate, followed by Congress' Singh and SAD's Sukhbir Singh Badal.
AAP leaders and supporters wasted little time in tweeting links to the report. But some pointed out that the survey was likely to have a strong urban bias and voters in Punjab were notorious for keeping their cards close to their chest until the voting day.
