What’s Andhra Pradesh’s best-known product? According to former chief economic advisor Shankar Acharya, it’s the ability to produce RBI governors. At a function in Hyderabad that Acharya was presiding over, three people on the dais were Andhraites — former RBI governors YV Reddy and M Narasimham and the present governor D Subba Rao. The other person seated on the dais, former RBI Governor C Rangarajan, was not an Andhraite, but has been governor of the state for five years. “Indeed, I heard rumours from time to time that there has been talk of having Telugu as the official language of the RBI”, Acharya said to the delight of the distinguished guests who came to witness a panel discussion organised by the RBI. Later, when Y V Reddy addressed the gathering he made his Andhra connection evident by explaining some of the points he made in Telugu.
