The Congress party may have issued a diktat against the use of feudal titles liks Raja and Rani, but this didn’t quite register with the mandarins in the ministry of external affairs. So, the junior minister Parneet Kaur was described as ‘the wife of former chief minister of Punjab and the Maharaja of Patiala’. This was pointed out by retired IFS officer Mani Lal Tripathi who emailed Foreign Secretary Shiv Shankar Menon. Menon replied immediately, regretting the mistake in Kaur’s profile, adding ‘there should be no place for feudal titles in our republic in the 21st century’.
