It was a rare occasion when political parties with differing ideologies arrived at a consensus. Political parties in Maharashtra made a strong pitch to resume bullock cart races reminiscent of the agitation to lift the ban on Jallikattu in Tamil Nadu. The Maharashtra government, led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis — who has been credited with the Bharatiya Janata Party’s stellar performance in the civic and local body elections — has hinted that a Bill would be tabled in the Budget session starting March 6. The proposed Bill would be similar to the one the Tamil Nadu Assembly passed in January. A race of sorts has begun among parties to gift a bull to Fadnavis for taking up the cause. The inspiration in this case, again, was the gift Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Working President M K Stalin received on his 65th birthday — a bull, to honour his efforts to reinstate Jallikattu.
