A K Bhattacharya's column "A three-point test for UPA I & II (New Delhi Diary, February 5) presents a critical analysis of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA)'s policies and efforts regarding fiscal discipline, tax reforms and expenditure management. It raises a substantive argument of balance between politics and economics. A span of 10 years is not short to analyse the economic scenario of the country and take appropriate steps to make it more comfortable in an era of globalisation and growing competition. There were no tax reforms and expenditure was managed poorly during the UPA's reign. This will eventually provide an easy opportunity for opposition parties to criticise the current government and make more promises to the public in the forthcoming elections.
