World class or not, the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) have been demanding freedom from Shastri Bhawan for a while now, only no one seems to have any idea about the final form and feature of this independence. At a recent meeting in Delhi, the director of an IIM remarked in exasperation that the issue of autonomy in IIMs was akin to feminism and the debates over the amount of time a woman should spend in the kitchen, bedroom and boardroom. Like the feminist, he said, even the stalwarts of management education have no clue about which rules would serve the ultimate purpose of independence better!
