The apparent chemistry between Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Prime Minister Narendra Modi during an inter-state council meeting in New Delhi on July 16 has set tongues wagging.

"The PM answered issues raised by Nitishji at least four times during the course of his speech," said a Janata Dal-United (JD-U) leader present at the meeting.

"It seemed that our party was back in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA)." The JD-U was part of the NDA for about 17 years till it fell out with the alliance in 2013.

At the inter-state meeting, the only other chief minister who got such a detailed response from Modi was Kumar's West Bengal counterpart Mamata Banerjee. Bharatiya Janata Party leaders were, however, unhappy with Kumar's criticism of the central government.
