The ministry of external affairs recently invited some Indian journalists to a dinner it hosted for about a dozen journalists visiting from countries such as Mauritius, the Maldives, Jamaica as part of the International Year of Small Island Developing States (SIDS). One Indian journalist wanted to know whether SIDS was an internationally accepted acronym or something the government of India had conjured up. An Indian Foreign Service officer prepared to dispel the ignorance of the journalist, but an official from his clerical staff beat him to it. "It [the acronym SIDS] is on Google, sir," the visibly dismayed assistant told the errant journalist with an air of finality. The others didn't know whether to be amused or embarrassed in case the visiting journalists, who already seemed a bit chafed at the patronising attitude of some of their Indian counterparts, had heard the conversation.
