It is well known by now that wheat production in the current crop year than ended in June is projected at a record 86 million tonnes, bringing with it more problems of storage. Such is the gravity of the problem that at a recent meeting of state food ministers and secretaries, a senior official from Punjab lamented that most playing fields in the state have been converted into wheat silos for lack of storage. He called upon the consuming states to lift wheat as fast as they can otherwise the Grand Trunk Road, which, incidentally, also connects Delhi, will be blocked by grain.
