The BJP government in Chhattisgarh has taken a slew of measures to protect the cow and encourage its rearing — each tribal family, adding up to a third of the state’s population, was promised a free cow — but this hasn’t really helped. The latest Economic Survey for the state shows the per capita consumption of milk in the state has come down to 119 grams (against the national average of 250 grams) while that for eggs has gone up to 47 (against the national average of 43 eggs). The BJP’s explanation for the poor showing is that the cows that were transported from Gujarat and Haryana either died or fell ill and, therefore, produced less milk. Of the 14,459 cows distributed under the scheme between 2005 and 2007, over 2,000 have already died.
