The foundation stone-laying ceremony for the second phase of the Bangalore Metro over the weekend was not only a hurriedly-organised job, but the crowd that attended was also hurriedly mobilised. The event, scheduled for 7 p m, saw the chief minister arrive three hours late because he was busy inaugurating several other projects across the state, which he was criss-crossing by helicopter. By the time he arrived there were perhaps a couple of hundred people at the venue which initially had over 2,000. Of those in the crowd, over half were policemen who had to stay put unlike the hired audience that refused to wait to such an advanced hour even after the organisers provided entertainment and free transport.
