Are UP Governor Ram Naik and Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan on collision course? In a four-page letter to the Governor that he released to the press, Khan has leveled all sorts of charges against the Governor, including that he is acting as a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) member and undermining an elected government. Oddly these charges have not had the endorsement of Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav.
Khan wrote this letter after the Jauhar Ali Research Institute land was given to the Jauhar Ali Trust. The building belonged to the erstwhile Nawab of Rampur and was lying vacant and subject to encroachment, so Khan says, he transferred the land to the Trust to open a public school. The Governor has objected to this. By the way, the Governor was in Delhi recently and met the prime minister where, no doubt, he gave voice to the prickly relationship with a minister of the ruling UP government. What view the government takes of this remains to be seen.
