They may be united in their fight against the United Progressive Alliance government, but the undercurrent of one-upmanship between the Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) or CPI(M)continues to flow strongly. Last Thursday, CPI leader in the Lok Sabha Gurudas Dasgupta found out that the CPI(M) was holding a press conference on the Wikileaks revelations. He called up a few political leaders to ensure that it became a press conference of the non-National Democratic Alliance opposition instead. On Friday, CPI(M)’s Sitaram Yechury was supposed to give some sound bytes to the news channels but Dasgupta arrived minutes before him. The veteran CPI leader showed no inclination to relinquish his position before the cameras and kept Yechury waiting almost 10 minutes.
