Apropos the editorial "President Shah" (July 15), the National Democratic Alliance government is now built on three pillars - a powerful prime minister, an all-pervading Prime Minister's Office and now a Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) president intent on winning every election. In the single-minded pursuit of growth and winning elections, we may see a much-reduced role for ministers, bureaucrats and party functionaries. The marginalising of internal opinion within the BJP might well follow. The party should not end up losing out on the larger vision, only to trade it for short-term political vantage positions. A top-driven style and regimen may help attain few select objectives of the day by demanding compliance, be it governance or the party's election agenda, but will not germinate imagination, innovation and job pride in the lower ranks of the party. There must be a convergence of both top-driven and bottom-inspired approach. The Left suffered grievously on this count and so has the Congress party.
