This refers to the report "Goswami removed as Home Secretary, L C Goyal appointed to the post" (February 5). As a first instance of impropriety at the highest level in the bureaucracy since it came to power at the Centre, the Bharatiya Janata Party was right in sacking Home Secretary Anil Goswami, following what's clearly a transgression by his own admission of using his influence to stall the proceedings against former minister Matang Sinh arrested in connection with the Saradha scam. Modi sarkar must be commended for its alacrity, without giving any room for embroiling itself in the trail of its alleged involvement, accusations and fire-fighting that would have dealt a severe blow to the new dispensation.

At a time when the investigation into the country's largest chit fund scam is on, the government letting Goswami retire voluntarily would have given the much needed political fodder to the Opposition to put the Centre on the mat. Home Minister Rajnath Singh earned a few brownie points in favour of good governance, as he sent a clear message of zero tolerance for such things.
