In the wake of the Liberhan Commission report on the Babri Masjid demolition, BJP leader LK Advani has said that he was proud of his association with the Ayodhya movement but distressed by the demolition of the mosque. He, however, is full of contradictions. On the one hand, he agrees that all those present in Ayodhya on December 6, 1992, were either from the BJP or the Vishwa Hindu Parishad. On the other hand, he claims that the leadership of his party’s organisations tried to stop the demolition. One is really at a loss to understand these puzzling statements about the incident that will be imprinted forever in Indian history. We have already seen the vote-bank politics played by the political class vis-à-vis the December 6 incident because of the inordinate delay on the part of the government and the Liberhan Commission in submitting the report on the demolition.

The time has now come for the Central government to act swiftly to bring to book all the culprits listed in the report.
