Now that the model code of conduct is in force, political parties will exercise extreme caution when they transport large amounts of cash. As usual, the vigilance authorities can be expected to do their duty and any large cash seizures will be published in the media in the interests of boosting TV rating points. But such news items are little more than isolated bits of information for the public since there is no knowledge of how much cash was seized in earlier elections. The Election Commission would do well to publish a state-wise status of cases booked (or Action Taken Report) in previous polls. This will not only enhance the Commission's credibility but also instill confidence in the public that elections are held in a fair and democratic manner.
