Apropos the editorial "No pain, no gain" (December 18), when basic air fare is less than the taxi charge to the airport, troubles wait in the corner. At least private carriers fold up showering largesse on clients, but Air India has always charged high and yet survives year after year on government dole. Why then single out SpiceJet for getting a kind eye? Coal India has enormous pilferage at the pitheads, state electricity boards report huge "transmission" losses and make up through high tariffs. We, as a nation, have never believed in balancing the books. Most states spend 80 to 90 per cent of their revenue on salaries. The concept of a mai baap sarkar is deeply ingrained both in the ruler and his subject. The little that we achieve is through the diligence of a few institutions and business houses that keep their books clean through simple accountancy
