With reference to Narendra Apte’s letter (“Banking standards,” October 11), things are getting from bad to worse with state-owned banks. I would like to highlight a problem I have faced with my local local state-owned bank, the premises of which were suddenly shifted to a distant location. For elderly people like me with a 45-year-old account in the bank this was extremely inconvenient. All representations by the various registered residents associations and hundreds of customers went in vain. A senior officer of the bank assured me that new premises would be hired at a closer location but that building has been under construction for over a year. An additional problem is that the bank’s branch has demat services but does not start working before 10 a m although the stock market opens much earlier. Further, the demat statement does not reflect the date of acquiring the asset nor its valuation on any specific date.
