It is a matter of pride that former Chief Economic Advisor Kaushik Basu has been appointed by the World Bank as its chief economist. India is known for its big talent pool and Indians are widely respected in the West, particularly in the US. They have proved their mettle on many occasions in the past with exemplary performance in the most trying and critical conditions. Basu is a scholarly figure and has many impressive academic achievements to his credit. Surely, he will make the most of this challenging assignment to justify his appointment, especially at a time when the global economy is passing through a turbulent phase and struggling to return to the high growth mode.
