Apropos the recent controversy on net neutrality, as a web user, I am disappointed with the recent proposal to create differential access to the internet. One appreciates the government's "Digital India" campaign and realises the importance of getting the internet to the less privileged rural community. But we fail to understand the logic of discriminating websites for this social cause. The move by a few telecom operators to provide free data is welcome but it should not be at the cost of burdening others.

Net neutrality is crucial for small business, especially start-ups, who bank on open internet to launch their businesses, create a market, advertise their products and services, and also distribute using e-commerce websites. Market innovation together with government intervention is the best possible way to achieve the 'Digital India' goal.
