This refers to the article “Of men and ‘godmen’ (June 4) by Sunanda K Datta-Ray. It is due to the failure of Indian Parliamentarians to ensure good governance that people like Baba Ramdev or Anna hazare have become relevant for governance to make a paradigm shift. Although the article is critical of Ramdev’s blackmailing tactics, it fails to offer any alternative suggestions. It is no secret that politicians have vested interests in maintaining the status quo and are, therefore, least likely to be the agents of change. Even the best of systems need to be subjected to external scrutiny from time to time to make them function more effectively. So, the efforts of people like Baba Ramdev or Anna Hazare should not be discouraged and discredited merely because they may have political ambitions.
