This refers to Shayamal Mazumdar’s column “Golden parachutes” (Human Factor, September 16). One cannot help but wonder how the likes of Metro Man Sreedharan or Subbarao or YV Reddy function, or the countless senior officials at banks and PSUs the world over and the government. Not to forget the generals and marshals and admirals or the HODs and VCs of universities, and judges of courts. They must be demoralised assuredly or plain incompetent or corrupt or on top of Maslow’s hierarchy or all of these depending on who we are referring to.

But a society that does not regulate compensation has only itself to blame if animal-like behaviour replaces humane behaviour. In which case, interest in Pavlov and Skinner may rekindle. Also we may need to coin a word that is an appropriate antonym for “anthropomorphism”.
