This refers to the editorial "The banking agenda" (January 5). More than promises, the clientele of the Indian banking system is interested in knowing how best - and how soon - the lost health of the financial system can be restored.

Even the Gyan Sangam in Pune was not keen to go deeper into the structural and human resources-related issues in both public and private sector banks. As the Reserve Bank of India governor once said, issues such as growing non-performing assets can be tackled, provided there are systems in place to prudently manage bank operations and prevent leakages. There is an urgent need to infuse talent and ensure continuity at the top level and send a message down the line that banks will be allowed to do business without any directions from the political leadership. The message from top finance ministry officials at the sidelines of the Gyan Sangam was loud and clear that bank executives need not live in fear of "calls from Delhi" any more.
