This refers to the editorial "Another step forward" (November 24). It may be true that the US president is currently a lame duck at home but in practice, government policies of a foreign country are supported despite internal political differences. It is an achievement that two of the major democracies of the world are strengthening their diplomatic and trade relations, mutually respecting each other's policies. Our relationship with the US requires periodic inspection to ensure that mutual respect between the two countries is retained. It is in this context that the first visit of the head of state of a world superpower as a guest at one of our major national functions commands global attention.

Additionally, a stable government in India is providing us greater economic flexibility in policymaking. Bilateral treaties entered into across the world will ensure our adaptability to change, according to the prevailing global political and economic climate. It will ensure stronger trade relations for India in a highly competitive global market, irrespective of the domestic political differences. The consequent boost in our international trade will also encourage internal economic growth and enable us to speed up our growth from a developing to a developed economy.
