The editorial "President Shah" (July 15) brings out the lack of consistency by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leadership in the matter of choosing its president. While it had no qualms in sacking Bangaru Laxman - the party's past president - even before he was held guilty of committing a crime or denying Nitin Gadkari a second term as president the party in its moments of glory chose to elevate Amit Shah to the party president post, despite ongoing criminal cases against him. But for the Supreme Court granting him bail, Shah would have continued to languish in jail. While he has still not been convicted of the crimes of which he is accused, the fact remains that he has yet not been cleared of the charges either. The party leadership perhaps has not bothered to even imagine the embarrassment his conviction would cause to the party. The party "with a difference" has totally compromised political morality by appointing Shah. In the process, Narendra Modi has not only established his supremacy over governance, but has also signaled that he will have the last word in the functioning of his party.
