From Jairam Ramesh to the political novice Rahul Gandhi, the Congress is parroting the same question: In the six years that L K Advani’s party was in power, did it take a single step to get the details of Indian accounts in Swiss banks? (“How real are the figures on black money abroad?”, April 22). Jairam Ramesh himself admits the fact that there are Indians with Swiss bank accounts.
The money put in these accounts is obviously illegal and unaccounted money, smuggled from India and that received from kickbacks in foreign deals. Debating on issues such as how real the figures quoted by the BJP are is irrelevant and is just an attempt to evade the issue. Now that the matter has been made an election issue by the BJP and has become a subject of public debate, the Congress is feeling the heat. It should come out with a clear-cut programme for bringing back the money to India in case it returns to power.
