Sanctity and credibility of constitutional institutions is being severely damaged by arbitrary appointments of such persons as their heads who have political correctness but questionable and controversial credentials. Owing to the controversial background of P J Thomas, questions were raised on his appointment as Central Vigilance Commissioner (CVC) since the very beginning. Therefore, it was hardly surprising when the Supreme Court questioned his suitability for the post (“SC questions Thomas’ appointment as CVC”, November 23). It was shocking that Attorney General G E Vahanvati told the apex court that “impeccable credentials” were not a prerequisite for selection to any position. What the attorney general has left unsaid is that, above everything, one has to be politically correct to get top positions. The prime minister and the Congress party president deliver sermons on probity in public life and raise high-pitched calls against corruption but this is where their government really stands on these issues.
