Apropos the editorial “Right to Information” (August 7), the main reason the Congress is at the receiving end in the states is that the party has miserably failed on this indicator — regionalism. It is always fiddling with the national non-issues, dumping local issues confronting the people in the states. As a result, most voters think the Congress is more of a national party than a local party.
In Tamil Nadu, for instance, the Congress has not come to power after the late Congress leader Kamaraj. And the people are successively giving their mandate to the Dravidian parties. The Tamil Nadu trend is only the tip of the iceberg.
Besides, the many endorsements from within the United Progressive Alliance for Rahul Gandhi as prime minister cannot be dismissed. In fact, Gandhi has all the qualifications for the job. His record in the tribal and rural areas is exemplary. In the context of changing political equations and rampant corruption in India, the country requires a thoughtful leader.
