Shankar Sharma's article "Corruption is a non-issue for the voter" (April 23), suggesting that the conscience of the voter is dormant and he can barter it for monetary gains, is misleading. Had corruption really been a non-issue for voters, then why would the Congress be losing out to the Bharatiya Janata Party, as the exit polls indicate, despite setting up the sixth Pay Commission in 2006 after it came to power and notifying a seventh one so quickly?
2011 was the year when not only were people's salaries dwindling and growth plummeting, but also scams under the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) were surfacing one after the other. Apart from this, UPA leaders defended the tainted ministers with obnoxious arrogance. Ordinary taxpayers felt a sense of frustration and deceit and Kisan Baburao Hazare's and Arvind Kejriwal's movements gave them a voice. The time has come for taxpayers and voters to exercise their conscience.
