Might it be that a Cinderella-like India craves unaffordable, impractical, bling jewellery? Consider the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project. Sunanda Datta-Ray in his column, "An extravagant thank you" (December 12), is entirely right in calling the project extravagant as Indian Railways can do so much more with half that money, with system improvement that speeds up, even by 15 or 20 kilometres per hour, all passenger and cargo trains.
