This refers to "Vacating the vacations" (Chinese Whispers, December 13). It throws light on the need to curtail summer vacations for the judiciary in the wake of the swelling backlogs of cases in higher courts. In response to a parliamentary question by Haribhai Chaudhary of the Bharatiya Janata Party whether the judiciary "enjoys" summer vacations every year since the British era, Union Law Minister Kapil Sibal stated that a recommendation has been made to curtail vacations in higher courts by 10 to 15 days. Earlier, it was acceptable for the judiciary to enjoy summer vacations when the pendency of court cases was manageable. But, times have changed. Since courts have failed to show seriousness in disposing of cases within a time-bound frame, summer vacations for the judiciary must be dispensed with. If other departments can work during the summers, why should the judiciary enjoy summer vacations?
