The aviation model followed in India makes little sense. At a time when demand is low, airline firms are once again raising fares (‘Airfares set to climb 5-10%’, April 19). The latest round of air fare hikes is taking place by raising the ‘fuel surcharge’ — but fuel prices remain low, so why is this surcharge being raised? Also, why don’t the airlines decide on a strategy — they slashed the prices by 30 per cent in January, then raised it in February, then cut it in March. As it is, few people want to travel by air, and even those that do are being discouraged.
