With reference to "Dalit alienation" (February 1), Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi's comparison of Vemula with the Mahatma, only to gain political mileage out of his unfortunate death, was amusing. The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad might have added fuel to the fire, but then there was no mention in the editorial of Vemula protesting Yakub Memon's hanging. It is unfortunate that it has been made into a Dalit vs non-Dalit issue. The politicians who have gone to protest in Hyderabad were silent after the Malda killings, not long ago. It is a clear case of double standards. There have been nine such suicides in Andhra Pradesh in the last one year, but no one noticed. What is required is a thorough probe into the suicide, which the Modi government has given a go-ahead to. There is no point in excessively criticising either Union minister Smriti Irani or the Centre. It is the vice chancellor's responsibility to maintain discipline on a university's campus.
