This refers to the editorial "The vision thing," (July 2). While the government's offer of "less government and more governance" is laudable, it is no secret that ministers with more than one portfolio are overworked. Particularly concerning is the defence ministry, of which Arun Jaitley continues to hold "additional" charge.
Realising the touted "demographic dividend" through improved education and employment generation, will require increased mindshare and resources from this government. Devoid of this, the demographic dividend could easily transform into the biggest threat to national security. Hence, a significant increase in defence spending could be tricky.
Also, notwithstanding prudent efforts by the government to engage with next-door countries, ours will continue to be one of the most dangerous neighbourhoods globally. Additionally, security forces of today are required to train and equip themselves to face non-traditional threats such as piracy on high seas and urban terrorism.
This archetype neoclassical dilemma with such consequence demands creative, decisive and deliberate actions. With due credence to the competence of Ajit Doval and the possibility of a full-time defence minister in the offing, an advisor on military affairs is an imminent necessity.
