This refers to the report "Modi juggernaut crushes Congress" (May 17). The common people in India have once again asserted their humble voice. They have voted for a change. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies have a majority. They ran a brilliant campaign to sell their leader Narendra Modi, and the agenda of development and good governance. Modi delivered laudable results in his home state of Gujarat for the last 15 years, campaigned hard, traded blow for blow with the Gandhi family and yet retained his dignity. Many Congress heroes have fallen by the wayside. The Congress lost because of continuous inflation in prices of essential products such as food grain and vegetables, rampant corruption, poor execution of infrastructure projects and indifference to common people. The vice-president of the Congress party, Rahul Gandhi, also put in a lacklustre and indifferent performance. He has proved to be incompetent. If the Congress is to bounce back, it has to select its leaders on merit, not dynasty.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), India's new party of hope has performed weakly. The party fielded over 400 candidates, but garnered single-digit victories. AAP has massive work to do in organisation building at the grass-roots level. The message from these elections to the elected candidates is clear: please do not construe your election as a business or licence to make money, deliver your promises.
