This refers to the report “Anna Hazare is an unelected dictator, alleges Congress” (June 14). According to Congress spokesman Manish Tewari, the greatest danger for the democracy is from the “unelected” dictator. But what about “elected” dictators? Are they good for a democracy? The Congress’ arrogance and its contempt for civil society will cost the party dearly. In a democracy, neither the government nor Parliament is supreme. Instead, it is the people who are supreme. Anna Hazare and Ramdev are the safety valves for the mounting pressure of public anger at the government’s lackadaisical approach to curbing corruption. If these valves are choked, it would be difficult to predict what will follow.
