Nowadays one dreads festivals because of the air and noise pollution they bring in their wake. Pollution levels surpass permissible limits and take a toll on human health and the environment. The bursting of high-decibel firecrackers emitting noxious fumes is like inflicting gratuitous violence on the ill, the toddlers and the elderly. These affect the body's equilibrium and lead to stress even in a healthy person.
The tragedy is that people are increasingly becoming desensitised to the incessant bursting of firecrackers. Those who object to the bursting of firecrackers are criticised and silenced with threats of violence. A common sense approach to curb the pollution caused by humans is missing. But we need to adopt such an approach to save ourselves and the environment.
