With reference to the interesting article, "Extreme weather and global growth" (January 26), the writer, Kenneth Rogoff, has explained how El Nino impacts human activity and the economy. It is held responsible for extreme weather changes, including floods and droughts. Rogoff says El Nino will likely support economic recovery in the US and Europe, but also put pressure on emerging or developing economies.

El Nino significantly affects the nature of infectious diseases, including some pathogens. Short for El Nino Southern Oscillations (Enso), this climate phenomenon leads to greater risk of occurrence and spread of mosquito- and rodent-borne infections. The prevalence of mosquito-borne fevers such as chikungunya, malaria, dengue, yellow fever and the Zika viral infection have increased due to Enso.

When El Nino causes droughts, thus reducing qualitative nutritional intake by the population, it decreases the body's immunity to infections. Hence the demand for vaccines, anti-dengue preparations such as Carica papaya extract (for example, Caripill), and other medicines will continue to rise and the pharmaceutical industry will see a growth in sales due to these diseases.
